L’Eventail et La Mode

A unique opportunity to view museum quality antique costume and fans will be presented to the Public in France on September 3rd and 4th !

The Comite des Fetes in Saint-Eustache ( a small village above Lake Annecy) will mount a special exhibition of costumes and fans from the 18th century to the 1940’s.

Taking centre stage at the exhibition will be fans relating to the two Wars. Saint-Eustache has a particularly poignant past, suffering terrible retribution by the Nazis for the support given to the Resistance. The author of published research into the role of the Fan in keeping up moral and circulating propaganda, herself a retired Lt Colonel in the French Army, will present a lecture on the subject.

Fabulous Flapper dresses, beautiful wedding gowns, minaudieres, shawls and footwear will complement the various types of fans on view.

Experts from the Fan Circle International, based in the UK, and the Cercle de l’Eventail, based in Paris, will be on hand to guide visitors through the exhibits.

And the Piece de Resistance? Displayed for the very first time, a very special fan commissioned by the Fan Circle International to celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2015. Created by Sylvain le Guen, Maitre d’Art in Paris, the fan is designed to feature different techniques in fan making and will serve as a tool to illustrate intricate craftsmanship to Art and Design Students here and abroad. Following September’s exhibition, this fan will be loaned to museums who feature specialised fan displays.

Visitors to September’s exhibition are invited to bring along family treasures in textiles, costume, lace and fans for advice on conservation and storage.

This exhibition, which promises to be a treasure trove of beautiful and sometimes amusing items, will be opened by the mayor of Saint-Eustache on Saturday September 3rd. For more details contact comitesteustache@gmail.com  Interested groups (such as lacemakers or embroiderers, schools and colleges) are invited to request private viewings. The exhibition will be held in the Salle des Gentianes, Chemin des Gentianes, Saint-Eustache, 74410.
